Home/Services/Cable & Track Repair

Crooked, grinding, off its track.

Cables and tracks are the door’s load-bearing path. When they fray, bend, or drift, the door goes from noisy to dangerous. We make it safe first, then straight, then smooth.

The signs you already noticed.

  • A cable visibly frayed, rusted, or hanging slack
  • The door sitting crooked — one side higher in the opening
  • Grinding or scraping as the door travels
  • A roller popped out of the track, or the track visibly bowed
  • The door jumped the track entirely and hangs at an angle
  • A gap between the vertical track and the wall that wasn’t there before

How the visit runs.

Make it safe, first. A frayed cable or racked track is a drop hazard over whatever — whoever — is below. Step one is securing the door so nothing and nobody is under tension.

Find the why, not just the what. Cables fray from misaligned drums, worn bearings, or a door out of balance. Tracks bend from impacts and wind racking. We fix the cause so the repair holds.

Align, tension, test. Tracks set plumb and parallel, cables tensioned evenly, drums trued — then a full travel test you watch before we leave.

The two parts that carry everything

The lift cables transfer the springs’ energy to the door; the tracks decide where the door is allowed to go. When either fails, the door’s 150-to-400 pounds stops being controlled weight and becomes a hazard. This is the repair category where “wait and see” is the wrong instinct — a cable down to a few strands is a countdown.

Why tracks drift in the valley

Wind is the quiet culprit. Santa Ana gusts push on the door’s broad face while it travels, racking it sideways against the tracks; over seasons, brackets loosen and tracks drift out of parallel. Dust compounds it — grit in the track wears rollers oval and widens the play. The result is a door that grinds, binds, and eventually jumps. The wind-season inspection checklist catches most of this early.

Repair, not resignation

Bent verticals can often be trued; brackets re-set; cables replaced as a pair with fresh drums inspected. An off-track door looks catastrophic and usually isn’t — most are re-seated, aligned, and running in a single visit. When a track section is genuinely kinked beyond trueing, we say so and replace the section, not the whole system.

Straight talk: If the door is hanging crooked or a cable has let go, do not hit the opener button “just to see.” The motor will pull the door further sideways and turn a repair into a replacement.

Questions about cable & track repair.

Is an off-track door dangerous?+
Yes — treat it as a drop hazard. Don’t force it with the opener and don’t stand under it. Keep people clear and call; this is what same-day slots are for.
Why do cables fray in the first place?+
Usually misalignment — drums out of true, worn bearings, or an unbalanced door making one cable do more work. We fix the cause, not just the cable.
Can a bent track be fixed or does it need replacing?+
Often fixable — tracks can be trued and brackets re-set if the steel isn’t kinked. Kinked sections get replaced individually. You’ll know which before work starts.
How much does cable or track repair cost?+
Less than most homeowners fear, and far less than a door that fell. You get the written number before any work begins.
